In this session, Dr. Darin Stockdill will discuss and demonstrate how the principles of design thinking and Understanding by Design can be used to develop and evaluate innovative approaches to developing literacy in your social studies classroom while still getting at your content. We will explore a process to identify literacy challenges, select routines or strategies or to address these challenges, try them out, and then reflect on our progress and refine our approaches. This process can be valuable for teachers who need to set learning goals, demonstrate MS/HS growth with data, and who also want to be reflexive in their own practice.
