This session explores current civil rights issues involving the police and how state and federal governments are responding to the concerns these events have raised. With the help of the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Federal Courts, we will discuss the constitutional basis of civil rights, selective enforcement, abuse of power, and constitutional policing. We will explore the best ways to speak to students about these highly emotional issues, provide pointers on how civilians should interact with police, and discuss ways to frame these issues that empower students to use historical knowledge and current event to constructively push for change.
