Children are spending as much time in virtual worlds as they are sleeping. However, they need to be aware of the real world if they are to develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed for participation in a dynamic democracy. Powerful social studies should be challenging, active, value-laden, integrative, and meaningful.
